Melitica Puppy of the Month

October/November PUPPY

Izzy and Zane
Owner: Jo-Beth Evan

Izzy and Zane came to us at the perfect time. For years, as my three children grew up in upstate New York, I thought about getting a dog, and after my son, Maxx, who was in 5th grade at the time, wore me down, I began researching Malteses. Originally we were only going to get one girl, Zoey, but after seeing a photo of her brother Zeke biting her ear, we knew in our hearts we needed the pair. Zeke and Zoey became the center of our family, often times finding them in bed with the kids, a part of a school presentation, or strutting down the street, only to be stopped by every neighbor. After fourteen and a half years filled with love, we lost our beautiful Zoey.

Our family was lost, and there was nothing that could ever replace her. Upon reflecting on all the love, comfort, and joy Zoey provided, I started to imagine what a new and different chapter would look like. Zeke, with his big eyes and sweet disposition had never been without his sister. It was a fluke that I found Dina, and as it turned out, she had a litter of puppies that were born the day Zoey passed. It was kismet. We knew these were ours.

After a few visits it was time to pick up our new babies. Of all my children, Maxx took Zoey’s loss the hardest. Now 25 and living in New York City, Maxx drove to meet us at pick up. When he saw Izzy for the first time, she jumped up and gave him a kiss, something he had been missing for a long time. It felt like a sign from Zoey. We took Izzy and Zane, two peanuts full of what seemed liked a boundless amount of energy home. Izzy was so excited, she sat on my daughter Libby’s shoulder the whole time. When they arrived, Izzy and Zane were greeted by their older brother Zeke and my eldest son Alec (Zeke and Alec are inseparable). Immediately they became members of the family.

Zane’s unique personality and silly disposition makes him such a lovable character. He often taps you with his paw after you scratch him behind the ear letting you know you are not done yet. Zane has also exhibited some behavior that seems very intelligent; from lining up his toys in a pattern, to speaking a howling language after playing with his favorite tiny beaver toy. Izzy on the other hand never seems to need a rest; an adorable, three pound hell-on wheels (Together they weigh just over six pounds). She is always down for a run around the house followed by lots of kisses. They are quite the pair and never leave each other’s side. With their beautiful long hair and daily bow, it is hard to get anywhere without being stopped, just like their sister Zoey.

Recently we, including Zeke who is now 16 1/2, celebrated Izzy and Zane’s second birthday!
